Your Backyard Flock
The life of a bird in the winter may not be as stress-free as many people think. As winter approaches many birds change some of their eating habits. Birds that usually eat insects may start to eat berries to supplement their diets. Birds will start to look for reliable sources of food for wintertime survival.
Besides birdhouses and nesting pockets, evergreen trees and shrubs offer wonderful protection to birds. Spruces, Holly Trees, White Pines, and Arborvitae provide a suitable protection and shelter for a warm and happy backyard flock.
There are many deciduous shrubs that produce berries that will feed your backyard flock through winter. The arching wands of calicarpa americana (beauty bush) last a long time and provide nutrition and moisture for birds in winter. Winterberry is stunning when the leaves drop in autumn and berries ripen. The laden branches of trees attract many types of birds throughout the winter. Crabapple fruit are the apples of the birds’ eyes! Cultivars with small fruit that hang on through winter are a must. Ideally, the most bird-friendly backyard will provide several types of winter bird shelters, food and water so a large number of birds can be secure during cold weather and winter storms
