Preparing your plantings for winter
Proper preparation now can mean the difference between your plants merely surviving the stresses of winter and actually thriving as conditions grow harsher with the falling temperatures.
Don’t underestimate the value of mulch
Covering the ground around your perennials, shrubs and trees with a protective blanket of mulch will keep them cozy until they are ready to roar back to life in the spring. Adding a 2” – 3” layer of this natural insulation maintains the soil at an even temperature, which is actually more important than keeping it warm. The mulch also adds nutrients that may have been depleted over the previous summer months. We suggest deeply watering trees and shrubs before the ground freezes, and a fresh layer of mulch helps conserve this moisture.
Guard your trees from not just the cold
Enclosing vulnerable evergreens with burlap screens or cloth shelters is an effective way to protect them from the blowing snow and damaging winds that will soon be headed our way. Although the cold may be your landscape’s most formidable winter threat, it’s not the only one. With the local wild animal population on the rise, consider protecting the bark of younger trees from damage caused by gnawing critters and hungry deer with specially made tree trunk guards or wraps.
