How to Create & Maintain Gorgeous Container Gardens with Amy E. Uva
If you’re looking for a new way to bring a little creativity and beauty into your garden or home this summer, container gardening is a great place to start. Container gardens provide a versatile, mobile and easy-to-maintain space for you to grow plants that might not otherwise be suitable for your garden’s soil. For a bit of expertise on the matter we turned to Amy E. Uva, an experienced horticulturist and Master Gardener at Gerbert & Sons who has been container gardening for years.
Thrillers, Fillers and Spillers Create Organized Beauty
One of the most difficult challenges a container gardener faces is figuring out how to select and arrange their plants so that they compliment each other and grow in harmony. Amy suggested that if you’re having trouble with this begin by finding a “Thriller,” a plant which is placed in the center or back of the container and provides a bright vertical component. Next find a “Filler,” a flowing plant that should surround and weave through the bottom of your thriller to provide some density to your display. Finally the “Spiller,” this should be planted on the outside and overflow from the container, softening the edges and providing some character.
Pot Feet can be the Key to a Healthy Container Garden
According to Amy, one the biggest keys to a healthy container garden is utilizing Pot Feet. Made from a variety of materials, Pot Feet rest beneath your container raising it slightly above the surface. Although this may not sound like much, the air flow it allows below gives the soil a chance to dry out properly after watering. Additionally, it prevents your surfaces from getting stained by the often moist bottom of the pot.
