Embracing the Changing of the Seasons
Each autumn we are reminded of how seasonal evolution can be both inspiring as you tidy up for the winter and prepare for the spring blooms and growth. We want to review six steps to take to make both your winter and spring a success.
1. Shrub and hedge maintenance
This is time to do any pruning to not only make your dormant garden look straightened up but also, depending on the species, prepare for fabulous growth in the spring. Reach out to Gerbert & Sons for a walk through the garden and yard to discuss what needs the be done. Some is best left to the experts and there are things you can do easily yourself. Some may need wrapping, good to do now and some need specific trimming.
2. Check out your masonry and lighting
This is the best time to make any adjustments and additions ahead of the cold frosts. Make sure you have cleaned all the paths and your lighting is working is peak condition. Make sure to get plenty of pet & plant friendly ice melt so you are ready for the first snow fall.

3. Look Up and Check Your Trees
Do you see any broken limps or any leaning trees that could come down in an late fall storm? This is the time to trim with enough time for the branch to ‘heal’ prior to winter. Are you going to do Holiday Lighting this year? This is the perfect time to have Gerbert over to do all your outdoor lighting. We are masters! Just ask Jeff to show you his house pictures!!
4. Perfect Time to Propagate
There are so many plants that you have lovingly tended to this year. Now is the time to reap the benefits in 6 months time. You have just enough time to transplant what you can, cover what you need to cover and propagate for a beautiful spring. All your spring bulbs should be in and mulch refreshed so you can protect the young plants.
5. Let’s talk Pots and Containers
Reach out and speak with Elizabeth about your container pots. They can be all dressed up for the holidays soon and she is glad to help you make this happen. She cautions that some pots need to be brought in for the winter months to prevent breakage.
6. Prep your soil
Now that irrigation is turned off for the winter, this is the time to get your soil tested and amended if necessary. Your future self will thank you. If your irrigation is not be inspected and properly put to bed for the winter, call John! He will also tell you all about the fantastic smart water savers you should be thinking about installing. He can’t help himself!
We hope this last bit of tidying the yard will be quick and enriching! We are here to help in any way.
We were serious about the holiday lights (Call Jeff!)
