Following Mother Nature’s lead with native landscaping
Don’t just shop local- plant local! Native or natural landscaping involves using trees, shrubs, ground cover, and grasses that are indigenous to our area as the main components of your overall landscape design. This style of planting has many advantages to both the homeowner and the environment, with most important being the big increase in conservation of our precious water supply. Since these native plants have adapted to the local area, they are more compatible with the existing soil and require less extra watering to thrive, making them perfect options for areas where periods of drought make for sad vegetation and an irrigation system just isn’t feasible. Once they’re established, they require very little maintenance to stay hardy and attractive. Native plants also provide a habitat and food source for birds, butterflies, insects, and other species, creating a healthy, diverse ecosystem that in turn provides interest, pest management and pollination. Native plantings can be just as colorful as other choices, particularly in our area- at Gerbert & Sons we’ll advise you on the best combinations for your acreage, resulting in beautiful, low maintenance, and environmentally friendly landscape design. If a section of your yard proves difficult to mow, a wildflower meadow may be an ideal solution, or for an area with poor drainage, consider a wet meadow, with native plantings that love the damp, saturated soil. Shady areas can be enhanced with plants that thrive and flower without needing full sun, and if browsing deer are a problem, opt for a variety of ferns, which they find especially off-putting.
Have Gerbert & Sons introduce a native landscape to enhance the health and diversity of your property.
