Stopping to smell the roses – and keep them safe from Jack Frost!
Some tender loving care and an ounce of prevention now makes for beautiful, healthy, and vibrant roses in the spring. One of the biggest keys to success over the winter is preventing the freezing and thawing cycle that can do so much damage- strangely enough, we want to make sure we’re keeping your plants consistently cold and frozen. Gerbert & Sons are pros at figuring out the appropriate time to add a layer of soil around the base of the plants, and then follow it up with a thick layer of mulch, straw or compost, to help keep the ground frozen and your roses at a constant temperature. In very windy areas, we add a wire enclosure to avoid additional damage. Now is also the perfect time to remove any dead leaves so they don’t increase drying or provide a haven for disease. With the arrival of warmer weather, this natural scarf is removed and your roses will be ready to bloom again!
