Spring Yard & Garden Tips and An Invasive Worm Alert
Final touches to spruce up your yard
With the summer entertaining season approaching, it’s time to put the finishing touches on your property as you welcome friends and family back to your home. Expertly trimming your lawn adds that clean, crisp edge as the perfect complement to your landscape’s overall appearance. We also suggest adding the beauty and benefits of a fresh layer of mulch around your trees and shrubs. In addition to adding texture, color, and a well-manicured look, our natural mulch conserves moisture, improves the soil, and helps to prevent weeds. Have Gerbert & Sons maximize your property’s curb appeal and enhance your gathering spaces as we move our living and celebrating outdoors.
Create your own “farm” to table experience
The longer days and warmer nights of May let us know the spring planting season has finally arrived. Once the threat of frost is gone and the ground has warmed, it’s time to head out to the garden. Prepare your soil by testing and amending with organic matter such as compost, and cultivate to aerate and avoid compaction, allowing moisture and nutrients to reach deep into the garden beds. Rotate the location of your plant varieties to reduce the chance of fungal disease, especially tomatoes. Consider heirloom varieties to complement your garden’s bounty and broaden your family’s palate. Plant a selection of herbs in container gardens to pick throughout the summer, adding that fresh, savory touch to your sauces and salads.
Jumping Worm Warning!
Our region is experiencing a new threat from an invasive jumping worm species that is altering topsoil and destroying native plants and animals by devouring the upper layer of organic material. Experts are cautioning these worms can be transmitted in potted plants and suggest checking the soil carefully and washing roots if needed. Also, carefully inspect topsoil and mulch before adding to your landscape. So far, there is no effective treatment to combat or eradicate these damaging worms.
