Using Native Plants Rather Than More High Maintenance Non-Native Plants
When selecting and arranging plants for your garden, it’s often tempting to include a diverse group of non- native plants to make your landscape more unique. However, the use of native plants is actually the better choice for you, your garden and the environment as a whole.
Native plants are less work
Trying to keep non-native plants healthy outside of their natural environment is a lot of work, since they need extra watering, maintenance and pesticides. A plant from a different environment will always need extra care, as they will be battling to adjust to their new habitat. However, native plants will thrive in the conditions and climate of your garden as that is their natural surroundings, and they will have already developed defenses against many of the common pests and diseases in your area.
Allow your plants to live in harmony with their habitat
When creating a garden for your home, you have to realize that you are contributing a great deal to your surrounding ecosystem. The use of native plants will keep biodiversity in tact, while providing animals like birds with a welcoming habitat. Native plants are a massive piece of an ecosystem, as they support a variety of life forms and play a key role in maintaining harmony in an environment. Conversely, if a foreign plant is introduced it provides little to the environment, since the surrounding life has not evolved alongside it.
