Flowers For Cutting
Many flowers that already exist on your property can be cut and enjoyed as flowers and foliage in your home. They can offer diverse alternatives to going to the florist. The landscape border can provide stems for cutting throughout the year. We just need to decide if we want a garden just for cutting or to adapt an existing border.
An easy way to fill out your existing border is to add larger groups of plants that are suited to cutting. This should not affect the overall appearance when flowers are removed. Adding shrubs and grasses with interesting foliage will also add to your hand-made bouquet.
A dedicated space for a cutting garden is another option. One advantage to this is that it avoids over-picking from the landscape border. In this type of garden, plants are usually planted in rows. There is adequate access in between the rows for harvesting, staking and weeding.
Not all flowers and shrubs are suitable for cutting. Some just prefer to be left on the plant. Here are a few common plants in your landscape that you can cut. Black Eye Susan, Peony, Daffodil, Tulip, Salvia, Snapdragon, Dahlia, Heather, Quince, Hydrangea, Lilac. If you would like a complete list let us know or we can talk about it!
